International Mother Language Day and Black History Month Celebrated with UNISA Press Titles

On the day the world celebrates International Mother Language Day, Unisa Press showed its commitment to promoting the diversity of the country’s cultural heritage by staging an event which included Elvis Saal from the Unisa Department of Afrikaans, a recital of Xhosa poetry by Marie Matee, and creative writing and singing from Danisile Ntuli.

This was a continuation of International Black History Month, and was a collaboration with the Department of African Languages, which focuses on promoting the use of mother tongue from childhood in all the official languages of South Africa. Held at the African Languages Literary Information Museum, Inge Kosch’s themes of multi-lingual South Africa, identity and double-consciousness in a story of finding one’s identity also held sway.

On exhibit were all socio-political texts, the Hidden History Series, and African language books in various genres for children and adults from Unisa Press. A call was put out for other diverse established or debut voices. Works can be sent to Kenneth Mabaso at mabaskm@unisa.ac.za.
